What is local SEO?

Local SEO is how your business shows up when nearby customers search for what you offer. Here's what it means and why it matters.

Local SEO (search engine optimization) is the work of getting your business to show up when people near you search for what you offer — searches like "med spa near me," "barber in Brooklyn," or "emergency plumber." It's the difference between being the business customers find first and being the one they never see.

Why it matters for your business

Most local buying starts with a search. When someone needs what you sell, they pull out their phone, search, and almost always pick from the businesses at the top of the results and the map — usually one of the first few. If you're not there, those customers go to a competitor who is.

And the deciding signals are measurable: 97% of consumers read online reviews when choosing a local business (BrightLocal, 2026), and Google says a complete Google Business Profile makes customers 70% more likely to visit (Google). Local SEO is the work of winning on exactly those signals.

Unlike paid ads, local SEO compounds: the work you do keeps paying off, and a strong local presence is hard for competitors to displace. For a local business, it's often the single highest- leverage growth channel.

How it works (in plain terms)

When you search locally, Google shows a map with a short list of businesses (the "local pack") above the regular blue links — and the top few capture the large majority of clicks and calls.

The local pack — winning a top-three spot is the goal of local SEO.

Google decides who appears there based on how relevant, how close, and how trusted each business is (see how Google ranks local businesses). Local SEO is everything you do to improve those signals:

  • A complete, active Google Business Profile
  • Consistent business info across the web (your name, address, phone)
  • A steady stream of reviews
  • A fast, relevant website
  • Showing up for the searches your customers actually use

We break each of these down in this section — start with how Google ranks local businesses.
